Vite racehorse Cox Plate winner
 Beau
Vite was foaled in 1936 and was by Beau Pere out of the mare Dominant
(by Martian)
From
60 starts he won 31 races including the 1941 Mackinnon
Stakes, Auckland Cup, 1940 Cox
Plate (beating Ajax)
and also in 1941, AJC
Metropolitan, and Chelmsford
Stakes and ran third in the Melbourne
Cup behind Skipton
and Son Of Auros.
The
Barrier Miner, October 26, 1940 described his win
over Ajax in the Cox Plate as this:
BEAU
VITE, who proved himself the best horse at the Randwick Spring meeting,
showed in winning the W. S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley today that
at the conclusion of the Melbourne Cup carnival he will be acclaimed
as Australia's best racehorse over all distances.
Today
in a magnificent race Beau Vite, who led over the last six furlongs,
defeated Ajax by half a neck, with Beaulivre half a head away third.
Beau
Vite and Ajax came into the straight almost on terms, with Beaulivre
about a length behind them. In a stirring struggle Beau Vite, although
challenged by Ajax and Beaulivre, was able to.hold them off and
just win.
In
being asked to take the lead so far from home Beau Vite was set
tremendous task by McMenamin, and it showed the confidence that
the rider has in the New Zealand horse.
McMenamin,
in all the races in which he has ridden Beau Vite -- he has won
the last five on him --has never been frightened to use Beau Vite's
pace early.
Today,
to the amazement of the crowd, he took Beau Vite to the front six
furlongs from home, but Beau Vite, like many great horses in the
past, seems to possess both the speed and stamina, and it is this
combination which allowed him to win today.
There
was no possible excuse for Ajax today. Badger rode him splendidly,
and he was close enough had lie been good enough rounding the turn.
He was beaten by a better horse on the day.
