Better Boy racehorse Hotham Handicap winner

Better Boy racehorse Hotham Handicap winne

Better Boy was foaled in Ireland in 1951 and was by My Babu out of the mare Better So (by Mieuxce)

In his career he had 33 starts for 8 wins, 5 seconds and 2 thirds for a total of over $10000 in prize money.

His main win was in the 1955 Hotham Handicap - now known as The Lexus

He probably should have won the Caulfield Cup in 1956 but left his jocket at the start.

Here's how The Age reported on that event:

Better Boy jumped from the inside gate but, unfortunately, his jockey Norm Powell hit the ground shortly afterwards.

This didn't deter Better Boy who, like most of his subsequent offspring, gave his all to finish the race just ahead of the hot favourite Redcraze.

Former jockey Kevin Mitchell, who rode the third placegetter Prince Delville, recalls that Powell had one leg out of the irons as the starter let them go.

"I'm pretty sure that is what happened. But it was a Caulfield Cup and when you leave the barrier, you don't look back. However, he didn't cause me any trouble in the run."

Better Boy had been imported to Australia by Dave Whiteside, who raced him for several seasons before retiring him to his Rangeview stud at Carrum Downs in Melbourne's south-east.
