King was foaled in 1907 and was by Persimmon out of the mare Tragedy
Queen (by Gallinule)
Persimmon
was owned by King Edward VII and had won the English Derby.
Comedy
King won the
Melbourne Cup in 1910, becoming the first foreign bred horse to
achieve the feat.
Prize money for the Melbourne Cup that year was £6178 and, starting
at 10/1 and carrying 49 kgs, he defeated Trafalgar and Apple Pie.
He
also won the Futurity
Stakes in 1910, and the St
George Stakes in 1911.
Comedy
King went on to be a great sire and his sons Artilleryman (1919) and
King Ingoda (1922) would also win the Melbourne Cup.
