The
geldings main wins were in the 1948
Sydney Cup, 1948 Colin
Stephens Stakes, 1947 Hotham
Handicap (now Lexus Stakes), 1947 STC Hill Stakes, 1949 Rosehill
Cup .
He
also ran second in the 1948
Melbourne Cup behind Rimfire and second in the 1952 STC Lord
Mayors Cup behind Star King.
The
1948 Melbourne Cup was the first year the photo finish camera was
in use. Controversially, the rider of Dark Marne, Jack Thompson,
was sure he had won and beaten Rimfire but the camera said otherwise
and Rimfire won by a nose.
It
was not until the following Autumn that a journalist from Sydney
proved the mirror and the post camera did not line up, so the photo
was not actually being taken on the winning line. Too late for the
punters and connections of Dark Marne
