Dulcify
was foaled in New Zealand 1975 and was by Decies from
the Australian mare Sweet Candy and was owned and raced
by the legendary Colin Hayes who later claimed he was
"the best horse I ever raced".
He
won his first race at the amazing odds of 330/1 and two
starts later was just run down in the SAJC Derby by Regal
Jester before winning his next start in the VRC Derby.
Dulcify
also won a Rosehill Guineas, 2nd in the Tancred Stakes,
and then won the
AJC Derby.
At
four he won the Craiglee
Stakes, 3rd in the Underwood Stakes and won the Turnbull
Stakes.
He
won the Cox Plate by a record seven lengths in 1979 and
was then favourite for the melbourne Cup when galloped
on by the eventual winner and suffered a broken pelvis
and had to be put down on 6/11/1979.
In
his career he had 21 starts fro 10 wins, 2 seconds and
a third for prize money of $568, 775 and is in the history
books as the first horse to win four $100,00+ races in
one season.
