Even
Stevens was foaled in 1957 and was by Fairs Fair out of
the mare Amaroo (by Gold Nib)
In
front of a crowd of 92293 people the five year old won
1962 Melbourne Cup by 4 lengths as 3/1 favourite carrying
8 stone 5 pounds ridden by Les Coles.
Interestingly,
Even Stevens became the first "fly in" to win
the Melbourne Cup when he was on the inaugural Qantas
flight for horses on October 2 that year from Wellington
to Melbourne.
He
also won the Caulfield Cup that year and took an estimated
half a million pounds from the doubles bookmakers after
being very well supported.
He
won 8 races in total, including the Werribee Cup, and
£43,895 in prize money. he was leased to Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth , the Queen Mother, but prior to sailing
for England, suffered an accident in training which necessitated
his retirement from racing.
He
was retired to stud New Zealand 1963 and died in 1975.
