the mare Speedy (by irish Lancer)
This
incredible gelding had 69 starts for 20 wins and 20 placings and won
nearly $80k in prize money.
His
main wins were in the Wellington Cup (three times), Trentham Stakes
(twice), Dunedin Cup (twice), Invercargill Cup, Canterbury Gold Cup,
and the James Hazlett Gold Cup.
He won his three Wellington Cups as an 8 year old, 9 year old and
10 year old and raced until he was 12.
He
was offered to Australian trainer Tommy Smith BEFORE his run of Wellington
Cups began but told the vendors at 8 years of age he was just "too
old".
