Hayai
was foaled in 1979 and was by Skyhawk out of the mare
Poppa's Girl (by Prince Poppa) and was purchased for just
$10000.
Trained
by Jim Lee, he was a great middle distance campaigner
who won 4 Group 1 races. They were the ATC
Metropolitan Handicap in successive years on 1983,
where he set a race record, and again in 1984 as well
as winning the Caulfield Cup in 1983.
He
also won The
BMW (then the Tancred Stakes) in 1984.
Other
wins during his career included the STC Stayers Cup, the
Chelmsford Stakes and a Craven Plate among other lesser
races.
After
winning $822,165 he stood at Stockwell Stud Farm at Diggers
Rest in Victoria for a service fee of $5,000.
He
never threw a single Stakes winner and he served just
52 mares over 6 years before dying in 1994 at age 15.
