Hyperno
- Melbourne Cup Winner 1979
Hyperno
was bred in New Zealand in 1973 and was by the sire Rangong
from Mikcarla.
In
his career, Hyperno started 76 times for 20 wins, 14 seconds
and 13 thirds for a prizemoney total of $722,145.
He
raced just once as a two year old but won six of his fifteen
starts as a three year old.
His
main claim to fame was beating Salamander by a nose in
the 1979 Melbourne Cup when trained by Bart Cummings.
Controversially, he collided mid race with champion mare
Dulcify who had to be put down following the incident.
Media magnate Rupert Murdoch must have
fond memories of Hyperno.
'According to Ray Lake, a part-owner, the media owner
gave him $15,000 in cash to put on Hyperno,'' Cummings
recalled in his memoirs, Bart: My Life. ''But he didn't
know where to put it safely so he put in in the freezer.
He thawed it out on Cup morning, took it down to the track,
and placed it on Hyperno at about 7-1.''
Hyperno
had been trained until 1978 by Caulfield trainer Geoff
Murphy.
He
ran in the big one again in 1980 and finished seventh
and ran 6th in the following year. Hyperno also won races
like the C F Orr Stakes at weight for age at Sandown and
the 1980 Australian Cup.
Hyperno
was named Australian Horse Of The Year in 1981 and later
enjoyed his retirement at harry White's country property
before passing away in 2002.
