Kiwi
- racehorse - Melbourne Cup winner
Kiwi
was foaled in 1977 and was by Blarney Kiss out of the
mare Malrayvis (by Messmate)
In
his career he had 60 starts for 13 wins for a total prize
money haul of over half a million NZ dollars.
His
main wins were in the 1983 Wellington Cup and 1983
Melbourne Cup when he came from last to first in the
straight to win by over a length an incredible feat that
no one who saw it would ever forget.
He
cost just $1000 as a yearling originally with the intention
of using him as a stock horse by Snowy Lupton. Legend
has it that as Kiwi proved to be a fast horse with plenty
of stamina around the Lupton farm, Lupton was convinced
by his friends to enter Kiwi in the Derby at nearby Wanganui,
to see how he ran under race conditions.
He
died in 1995 and was buried on Lupton's Farm.
