Lord
Fury - race horse - Melbourne Cup winner
Lord
Fury was foaled in 1957 and was by Edwardsii out of the
mare Sea Ruffle (by Sea Tonic)
His
main claim to fame was winning the Melbourne
Cup in 1961 after running second in the Caulfield
Cup that year. Because he had run last in the MacKinnon
Stakes in his cup lead up run, he was sent out at
20/1 but, with the feather weight of just 48 kgs and ridden
by Ray Selkrig, he won quite easily from Grand Print and
Dhaulagari leading all the way to win by 4 lengths.
His
Melbourne Cup victory was worth £20,750.
Other
wins included the Hill Stakes and Colin
Stephens Stakes, He also ran third in an Epsom
Handicap behind Shy High and Fine And Dandy.
