Martello Towers was foaled in 1956 and was by Gaekwar's Pride out
of the mare Nidhauli (by Nizami)
Trained by Peter Dawson,
he won the "Triple Crown" in 1959 when he won the Canterbury
Guineas, Rosehill Guineas and Australian
Derby in 1959 as a flashy grey three year old. (Octagonal did
the same in 1996)
A courageous front runner,
he also won the Hobartville
Stakes in 1959, the George
Main Stakes in 1961 (trained by T J Smith).
He was ridden in a great
many of his wins by George
Podmore.
In his career he had 37
starts for 11 wins, 8 seconds and 4 thirds and rang up $44806 in prize
money.
He was retired in 1962,
was purchased by Mrs Dot Parry, and stood at Perringa Stud in Western
Australia for a fee of 5000 guineas (about $11500). His offspring
included Kendor, Fine Marty and Santa Martell.
