The first horse race meeting was held in Australia at Parramatta in New South Wales. It included the first harness race also, won by a mare called Miss Kitty.
1877
A horse called Darkie won the first ever Great Eastern Steeplechase at Oakbank in the Adelaide hills, South Australia.
1887
The New South Wales Amateur Athletic Association was formed.
1930
John Landy was born - runner - Olympic and Commonwealth Games medallist, middle distance runner, later Victorian Governor (2001).
1938
At Rockhampton racecourse, Call Away, Suntuana and Edon Boy triple dead heated for first in the Labor Handicap.
1943
Jean-Louis Ravelomanantsoa was born in Madagascar. In 1975 he became the first of only two men to date to have won the Stawell Gift off the scratch mark.
