Jockey Darren Gauci was born. Won Victorian jockey's premiership 6 times

Champion mare Surround won her first race, the Carnegie Stakes at Caulfield. Ridden by Alan Trevena, who was to win on her 15 more times, she defeated Chicola Craft and started at 6/4 favourite.

A record fleet of 131 boats left Sydney in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.
