Australian sporting history on this day
1962 Melbourne Cup winner Even Stevens had his first race start when he ran 3rd of 13 in the Paterangi Foal Stakes at Waipa in New Zealand. He was first across the line but relegated to third on protest. In front of a crowd of 92293 people the five year old won 1962 Melbourne Cup by 4 lengths as 3/1 favourite carrying 8 stone 5 pounds ridden by Les Coles.
Jockey Stephen J Miller rode 5 winners on the card at the Ascot racecourse - he was an apprentice at the time
