Colin Defries made the first powered flight in Australia at Victoria Park Racecourse in Sydney.

In a Sheffield Shield Cricket match, South Australia was all out for just 47. NSW bowler Tiger O'Reilly ended with figures of 5 for 11 runs.

Fast bowler Ian Meckiff was called for "chucking" in the first Test against South Africa and immediately announced his retirement.
