Australian sporting history on this day
Don Tallon, test cricketer and wicket keeper, was born.
Melbourne Cup winner Think Big won his first race at Victoria park in Adelaide, a 1000m event, in which he defeated Bogan Loui. He started at 14/1.
Doomben Race Course in Brisbane proudly unveiled and used its $4.5 million on course totalisator for the first time.
1982 Melbourne Cup winner Gurners Lane ran 2nd of 14 in his first race at Moonee Valley over 1000 metres. He was horse of the year in the 1982- 1983 season.
The first game under lights was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. 82494 fans showed up to see Australia beat England by 7 wickets.
Olympic champion Shirley Strickland de la Hunty died aged 78
