Australian sporting history on this day
The Adelaide Bowling Club was formed.
Bruce Francis, Australian test cricket player - batsman (1972), born
Very handy galloper Kilshery won his first race at Randwick, a Juvenile Handicap, over 1200 metres defeating North Port by 1.25 lengths in 1.13.3. His main wins were in the 1961 Canterbury Guineas, 1962 All Aged Stakes, 1962 Stradbroke Handicap, 1963 All Aged Stakes and 1963 Oakleigh Plate. He raced at the same time as the legendary Aquanita, Wenona Girl and Sky High who all forced him to take the bridesmaid's title in many other good quality races.
Sydney's Oran Park Raceway opened.
Driver Alan Jones was named as Victorian Sportsman of the Year.
Jockey Darren Gauci rode 5 winners on the card at the Cranbourne racecourse
Golfer Greg Norman won his 6th Australian Masters title.
