Thomas Scott set a cycling record by riding from Adelaide to Melbourne in 4 days, 19 hours and 59 minutes.
Champion mare Wiggle won her first race - a 2YO Fillies Handicap at Randwick starting at 5/2 and defeating Miss Oriel. In her career she had 21 wins from 55 starts and won $116,305 before being sold to America and winning more than 2 dozen races. Her main Australian wins were in the 1958 Champagne Stakes, 1958 Stradbroke Handicap, T. M. Ahern Stakes, A. V. Kewney Stakes, 1959 Alister Clark Stakes, C. M. Lloyd Stakes, 1958 Caulfield Guineas, Edward Manifold Stakes, 1958 Hobartville Stakes, 1958 Linlithgow Stakes ( now Salinger Stakes), Queen's Plate.
Kostya Tszyu defended his undisputed super-lightweight boxing title with a sixth-round technical knockout of Jesse James Leija in Melbourne.
