The first lifesaving competition in Australia was held at Manly Beach in Sydney - a lot of the events won by the Bondi Club.

Roonsleigh, ridden by jockey R Grinham, won the Hobart Cup.

Champion racehorse Bernborough had his first race start at Toowoomba running unplaced in the Maiden Handicap over 5 furlongs

Kim Hughes, one time Test Cricket captain, was born.

Yachtsman Jock Sturrock named Australian of the Year.

Tim May, test cricket player - off spin bowler, born.
1965
Swimmer Dawn Fraser named as Australian of the Year - 6 weeks later the Australian Swimming Union banned her for 10 years from competition.

The Australian Institute of Sport was officially opened in Canberra by Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser.

Robert de Castella named as Australian of the Year.

The "Lady Cutler" won the Sydney Harbour Ferry Race. Third place getter "Karrabee" promptly sank when it returned to Circular Quay.

The night race meeting at a metropolitan track in Australia was held at Moonee Valley. The first race was won by Vitirinte ridden by Shane Dye.

Round the world solo yachtswoman Kay Cottee was named Australian of the Year.

Allan Border, Australia's Ashes-winning Test cricket captain, was named Australian of the Year for 1989.
