Australian sporting history on this day
Annette Kellerman, champion Australian swimmer, was born.  She later became an actress (The Mermaid), author (Fairy Tales of the South Seas), and arrested in 1907 for indecency for wearing one-piece bathing suit.
Joseph Tracey cycled from Melbourne to Sydney in a record time of 5 days and 3 and a half hours.
Norman Brookes became the first non-English player to win the Wimbledon Tennis Championship.
Expressman, ridden by George Moore, won the richest sprint race in Australia at the time, the Doomben Newmarket. The race is now known as the Doombewn 10000.
Racehorse Daliman won a race at Flemington race course starting at 200/1
Melbourne Cup winner Subzero won his first race at Flemington over 1600m in a 2YO Handicap event beating Abandoned Rose on a heavy track. He was ridden by Damien Oliver and started at 13/4.
NSW beats Queensland 32-10 in Brisbane to claim the 2005 Rugby League State of Origin series.
