Australian sporting history on this day
In the 100th rugby union match between Queensland and New South Wales, the northerners won 16-14. Only 4000 turned up to watch the centenary game.
Dick Reynolds, Australian rules footballer and coach, was born. He died 2 September 2002. He won three Brownlow Medals in 1934, 1937, 1938 and his statue was erected in 2004 at Parade of Champions, Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Golfer David Graham won the US Open golf tournament at the Merion Golf Club.
