Champion pacer Cardigan Bay died
aged 31on Puketutu Island off Auckland, New Zealand. He raced
in the USA from 1964 through 1968 and was the first horse in
harness racing history to win $1 million in prize money. In
North America, Cardigan Bay won 37 of 87 races with 16 second-place
and 19 third-place finishes. After he won a race at Freehold
Raceway in New Jersey that sent his career total to $1,000,837,
he was officially retired on Sept. 14, 1968, at a ceremony at
Yonkers Raceway that was attended by Keith Holyoke, who was
then Prime Minister of New Zealand. |
