Matthew Richardson, Australian rules footballer (Richmond), was born.

Sprinter Paul Narracott set an Australian record for 100 metres at 10.0 seconds in Brisbane.
1983
In a ring-in scandal, the racehorse Nordica was entered in a race at Broken Hill under the name Foden. He was backed from 50/1 to 2/1 and won easily. The race was later awarded to Eastern Crisis.

NSW narrowly won the Sheffield Shield beating Queensland by 1 wicket.
1989
Walker Kerry Saxby took 15 seconds off her own 5000 metre world record time at the Australian championships being held in Brisbane.

Cyclist Martin Vinnicombe set a new Australian cycling record for 1000 metres from a standing start at the Launceston velodrome.

The Sydney Kings become the first team to win three consecutive NBL titles after defeating the Wollongong Wolves.
