Australian sporting history on this day
The Stawell Gift was won by E.A. George of North Melbourne, Victoria, in 12 1/5 seconds.
Francis Okulich won the Australian Single Surf Ski championship at Scarborough, Western Australia - taken by a shark off Newcastle December 6, 1951.
Champion horse Winfreux won his first race - a Maiden Handicap at bendigo over 5.5 furlongs defeating Peter Filou by 5 lengths and starting at 9/4. He won 21 " black type" races including the 1965 Stradbroke Handicap, 1965 Doomben 10000, Feehan Stakes, 1966 Doomben Cup, 1966 & 1967 Tattersalls Cup and Barnes Plate (twice).
Darren Lockyer, Australian rugby league footballer / now TV commentator, was born.
All seven winners were ridden by female jockeys at the non-TAB Queensland Wondai meeting.  Apprentice Monica Ryan rode four winners and Jo Downes, Debbie Osborne and Jenny Cochrane rode one each.
Nicole Stevenson won the 100 metre backstroke title at the Australian swimming championships for the 7th consecutive time.
A saddle used on Phar Lap sold for AU$87,500 at an auction in Melbourne.
