Patrobas won the Melbourne Cup. It was owned by Mrs E. Widdis of Gippsland who became the first woman Melbourne Cup winning owner in history.  Patrobas was ridden by R. Lewis, his second of four mounts to win the famous race.

Four time world cycling champion Sid Patterson announced his retirement from the sport - he won over 300 events during his career.
