In a match on King Island in Bass Strait, Dee Dee Dowton of Collingwood out pointed Kim Ross from Northcote, in 3 one minute rounds, to win the Australian Women's Lightweight Boxing Championship. Shortly afterwards, the Victorian Parliament legalised boxing matches between women.

Herb Elliott, Dawn Fraser and Murray Rose named as Australia's greatest ever Olympians up until that time at a function in Melbourne.
