Edwin Flack, champion runner, was born; - double Olympic Gold medallist 1896 Olympics died 1935. He was Australia's first Olympian and in fact only competitor at the 1896 Games.

Les Poidevin, cricketer and tennis player, was born.

Bravo won the Melbourne Cup.

Auraria won the Melbourne Cup.

The Melbourne Cup was won by Clean Sweep from stablemate Maltster, both trained by Ballarat trainer James Scobie, a former jockey.
