Australian sporting history on this day
Whittier won the Caulfield Cup at 9/2 favourite and ridden by Jim Pike. He became the 5th horse to win the race twice.
Champion Queensland sprinter Eye Liner had her first race start when she won the MacDougall Stakes at Eagle Farm at 3/1 beating Bareme's Image
Melbourne Cup winner Vintage Crop had his first win at Thurle winning the Babs Welter over 3200 metres defeating Latin Lover and starting at 20/1. He was the first overseas-trained horse to win Australasia's greatest race and was trained by Dermot Weld, who returned to Australia in 2002 and won the Melbourne Cup with Media Puzzle.
At age 33 Mark Occhilupo won the world professional surfing title in Brazil.
Adelaide United played their first NSL match beating the Brisbane Strikers 1-0
South Australia trainer (700 winners) and former jockey David Balfour died aged 62. As a jockey he won the Port Adelaide Cup, Christmas Handicap, Cinderella Stakes and Queen Adelaide Stakes.
