Racehorse champion Trafalgar won his first race at Flemington - the VRC Stand Handicap defeating Carl Dour by 1.5 lengths and starting at 8/1. From 59 starts he went on to record 24 wins, 11 seconds and 6 thirds.

South Melbourne, now the Sydney Swans, won its first VFL premiership defeating Carlton 4.14.38 to 4.12.36.

The AJC Derby was won by wayward starter Manfred when he gave the field half a furlong start and still beat them home. He was still trailing the field by 25 yards at the mile post!
