Australian sporting history on this day
AJC Derby winner Gloaming had his first race start when he won the Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick over 9 furlongs at 7/2. He was an amazing horse that won 57 races from his 67 starts in Australian and New Zealand, at one stage winning 19 in a row. From his 10 non winning starts he ran second 9 times and amassed £43100 in prize money.
South Sydney won their 5th consecutive NSW Rugby League premiership defeating Newtown 30-10.
Eastern Suburbs won the NSWRFL Grand Final against South Sydney 19-3.
Balmain won the NSWRFL Grand Final Challenge against St George 13-12.
Swimmer Judy Playair was born. She won silver for Australia at the 1968 Olympics
