Australian sporting history on this day
Jockey Jim Pike was born at Newcastle in New South Wales. Pike's name in racing will always be connected with the legendary Phar Lap. With Pike up for the first time Phar Lap won the 1929 Victoria Derby in record time and from then on they were together in 30 races for 27 wins . He died in poverty at his Bondi home on 7 October 1969 .
Dawn Fraser was born; swimmer, multi Olympic gold medallist, later member of New South Wales parliament, broke 27 world records.
Newtown won the NSWRFL Grand Final Challenge against North Sydney 34-7.
Jack Brabham won the World Formula One Driver's Championship.
The Toowoomba Turf Club held Australia's first race meeting under lights. The first race was won by Binara.
Jockey Paul Harvey rode 5 winners on the card at the Belmont racecourse nearly six years to the day when he did it before.
Toowoomba race caller Pat O'Shea passed away.
