Pan - Melbourne Cup winner 1932 and 1934
Peter
Pan was foaled in 1929 by Pantheon out of Alwina and was
an outstanding champion horse in his day winning the Melbourne
Cup twice in 1932 and 1934 together with a number of black
type races including the AJC St Leger and Derby,the AJC
Autumn Plate twice, the Cumberland Plate twice and the
AJC All Aged Stakes.
The
second time he won the Melbourne Cup was one of the great
performances on a rain affected track as he carried the
massive weight of 9st 10lbs, the equivalent of 62.5 kgs
in today's weight scale and started at 14/1 and was ridden
by legendary jockey Darby Munro.
He
started in the Melbourne Cup for a third time in 1935
after recovering from illness but was soundly beaten in
to 13th place carrying 10st 5 lbs.
In
his fourth and fifth year he won six of 8 starts over
1600 metres breaking the Australian record on his way
through.
Owned
by Rodney Dangar and trained by Frank McGrath, Peter Pan
raced 39 times for 23 wins, 6 seconds and 1 third for
a total of £34988 ($69976).
Peter
Pan did go to stud at his owner's property near Singleton
with some success before he had to be put down after breaking
a leg in 1941.
Peter
Pan sired the stakes winners like Grampian, Peter and
Precept, who won the Moonee Valley Stakes and the VRC
Derby. Peter won the Williamstown Cup and was beaten in
to second place in the 1944 Melbourne Cup.
