Piping
Lane - Australian race horse
Piping
Lane was foaled in 1966 and was by Lanesborough out of
the mare Londonderry Air (Piping Time)
Bred
by Dr Michael Wilson, Piping Lane was the third Tasmanian
horse to win the Melbourne
Cup when he was ridden by John Letts to victory in
the race in 1972, starting at 40/1. The previous two were
Malua
(1884) and Sheet Anchor (1885).
Owner
by Tasmanian Ray Trinder, he was trained for the Melbourne
Cup by George Hanlon.
He
also won the C B Cox Stakes in 1972 as well as the Hobart
Cup.
In
his Melbourne Cup success, he defeated the flashy black
Magnifique and champion Gunsynd.
An
historical footnote: Piping Lane was the first horse to
win a "metric" Melbourne Cup as 1972 was the
year the Cup was changed from 2 miles to 3200 metres.
