Red
Anchor - Champion Australian race horse
Red
Anchor was by Sea Anchor from the mare Decoy Girl.
In his career
he started 14 times for 9 wins, 4 seconds and a third
and earned $773,880.
Trained originally
by Paul Sutherland and then by Tommy Hughes, some of the
wins were the Cox Plate in 1984, the 1984 Caulfield Guineas
and the 1984 Victoria Derby.
1984 was rather
a stellar year as he also won the Champagne Stakes, Moonee
Valley Stakes, QTC Sires Produce and Roman Consul Stakes.
He won the Group
II AJC Apollo Stakes in 1985 and was named Australian
Horse OF The Year in 1985.
Retired to Baramul
Stud for a $20000 service fee, he was less than spectacularly
successful but did sire the winner of the 1994 Epsom in
Navy Seal.
He finished
his days at Raheen Stud near Warwick at a paltry fee of
$3300.
He covered 735
mares between 1985 and 2000 inclusive, which produced
541 live foals. Of those 541 live foals only five ever
won a black type race - and two of the five only won at
Listed level (Dubai Desert and Highband). His only Group
1 winner was Navy Seal and his other two Group winners
were Orsay and Hasty Departure.
He died in 2001.
