Part of a report from The West Australian newspaper November 7, 1901:

"There were no withdrawals from the Melbourne Cup, leaving nineteen runners.

When the course was reached Revenue. was at his overnight's closing price, 5 to 2 against, but the public came so strongly for him, that the ring was forced to shorten the odds against him, and he actually touched 6 to 4, leaving off at 7 to 4, when the gong sounded, announcing the start.

As was only to be expected, Wakeful received good support, though Mr. Macdonald stoutly stuck to his previously expressed opinion, that she could not beat Revenue, and that it was only in deference to the fact that she had been so heavily befriended by the general public, that he had decided to run her.

Had he consulted his own wishes she would have been scratched, and reserved for weight-for-age races. She at one period of the afternoon hardened to 8 to 1, but with the run on Revenue she eased again to 10 to 1.

San Fran, carrying the colours of his new owner, a Wagga bookmaker, who paid £2,500 for him, after he won the Metropolitan, retained his position of second favourite at 4 to 1 but Australian Colors was easier and so was Hymettus.

Grasspan on the other hand, was in better request hardening from 25 to 1 to 15 to 1. None of the others came in for very much Gunga Din having gone out of favour after his indifferent display in the Melbourne Stakes."
