Roy Higgins on Light Fingers Bert Bryant

  Roy Higgins

"I owed a lot to Light Fingers

She became an enormous public favourite because we all used to talk about her as "the Little Girl" .

She was just a little bit bigger than a pony and she was the queen of the turf.

She was loved and admired, not for her beauty I can assure you of that, because she lacked that. She had ribs all hanging out all over her and she had the long narrow neck and a bitchy attitude about her when you were sitting on her back.

She reared back all the time but I think because of that she was loved and admired especially by the female race goers, the lady race goers because she was feminine.

She was feminine to the point that she had guts and determination and Bert Bryant was quick to grab hold of things like the Goondiwindi Grey - what fun he had calling him coming from last in the field - well he had the same fun back in the sixties and an admiration for Light Fingers and he used to say "here comes the little girl" and the people got behind that and they got behind Light Fingers and I was the one on top."
