Silver
Knight racehorse Melbourne Cup winner
racehorse Silver Knight was foaled in 1967 and was by Alcimedes
out of the mare Cuban Fox (by Foxbridge)
In
Australia his main claim to fame was winning the 1971 Melbourne
Cup ridden by Bruce Marsh and trained by Eric Temperton
and in New Zealand he won the ARC Great Northern St. Leger and
WRC New Zealand St. Leger.
In
the 1971
Melbourne Cup he was backed by a mysterious punter back
in July '71, to win the second leg of the Caulfield- Melbourne
Cups double. He placed 8 bets, picking different horses to win
the Caulfield Cup, but only Silver Knight for the Melbourne
Cup.
For
an outlay of $2,200, the punter won $100,000. In due course,
this mysterious punter presented his winning vouchers to bookmakers
Griffith and Attridge. He asked that his $100,000 be paid in
Australian currency - fair proof that he was from New Zealand
as it would never have occurred to an Australian that he could
be paid in any other way.
The
1971 Melbourne Cup turned out to be a survival of the fittest.
5 of the 21 runners broke down and another lost his rider. Some
of the injuries were caused by the hard surface of the Flemington
track, baked dry by the hot sun prevailing at the time.
Silver
Knight also ran second in the 1971 Mackinnon
Stakes behind Skint Dip.
As
a sire his most famous son was Black
Knight who won the 1984 Melbourne
Cup.
