This account of the 1920 Tamworth
Cup meeting was published in "The Daily Observer" on April
22, 1920:
"The Totalisator proved very
popular at this meeting as the following figures indicate: On the
first day 2828 tickets were issued of a value of 1414 pounds, and
yesterday 3302 of a value of £1651.
The total for the two days was 3065 pounds.
On the Newmarket Handicap the first
day 718 tickets were issued, valued at 359 pounds and on the Britten
Memorial Cup 998 tickets valued at £499.
The attendance for the meeting enormously
exceeded anything previously experienced by the Club, thus justifying
the decision to launch out by giving big prize money.
On the first day 2500 people were present, and on the second 2300.
The difference in the attendance the first day is accounted for by
the fact that a public holiday was granted for Tamworth, thus enabling
many employees to go to the races for the whole day.
The gardens and lawns were a picture,
reflecting the greatest credit on the caretaker, Mr Page. All the
visitors admired the beautiful flowers round the lawns. On each day
Jacob's string band was in attendance, and added to the enjoyment.
Mr. R. H. Munro, owner of Laddie Blue, winner of the Cup yesterday,
donated £20 to the Tamworth Hospital."
