Todman - Australian champion race horse

Todman was foaled on October 7 1954 and went on to be a champion race horse and sire of champions.

He was ridden throughout his career by the great Neville Selwood and was by Star Kingdom from Oceana and was a brother to Noholme, a winner of the AJC Epsom Handicap. He was bred at the Baramul Stud in the Widden Valley in NSW by Stanley Wootton.

Todman was trained by Maurice McCarten and contested only six races after his two year old season which resulted in six starts for five wins and a second. In his debut year he won his first race by 10 lengths,the inaugural Golden Slipper in 1957 by 8 lengths and the Champagne Stakes by six lengths when defeating the unbelievable Tulloch in a record breaking 1.10.0

As a three year old he only had three starts before breaking down. He won the Hobartville Stakes by two and a half lengths, the Canterbury Guineas by 8 lengths and then broke down while running fourth in the STC Hill Stakes that was won by Redcraze.

The next two years were spent trying to "get him right" by swimming him in salt water and a lot of long exercise runs on the beach.

He didn't start again until he was five when he won a Canterbury Flying by two lengths in race record time carrying 9 stone 7 lbs, the VRC Lightning Stakes by 6 lengths defeating Gay Port and the VATC Futurity Stakes, again in race record time carrying the mammoth 10st 2 lbs.

Todman was very good at setting new record times, doing just that in seven of his ten career wins from only 12 starts before being retired to stud.
