Tullmax
- Australian horse racing bush champion
Tullmax
was one of those horses that comes along from time to
time and really captures the racing public's imagination.
He
never won a major cup or big name sprint race but was
enormously successful around the provincial circuit and
when he came "to town".
He
had been tried without success in the "big smoke"
early in his career and finally passed in to the leased
ownership of Col Doulman and Jack Cantrill from the Molong
district and was trained by local postman Trevor Doulman
around the Molong Golf Course.
In
his first 16 starts for the new owners, Tullmax went from
easily winning a maiden at Parkes to notching up 13 wins
from his next 16 starts together with a second and a third,
not to mention a fourth in the Epsom Handicap at Randwick.
The
key to his improvement was in being cured of a major scouring
problem through a "secret recipe" of clay and
apples - the recipe being provided by noted Molong horseman,
the late Les Thomas.
His
best win was in the George
Main Stakes at Randwick from West Australian champion
Marjoleo and Bart Cummings-trained AJC Derby winner Belmura
Lad.
Another
great win was in the Tramway Handicap when he defeated
the T J Smith trained Iko by a nose in a stirring finish.
Following
retirement, Tullmax staged an exhibition gallop at Bedgerabong
picnic races and thousands of race goers, 10 deep along
the running rail, cheered the bush champion for the length
of the straight.
Tullmax
died in 2001 at age 27.
