Winooka racehorse 1933 Doncaster Handicap winner

racehorse Winooka was foaled in 1928 and was by Windbag out of the mare Kanooka (by The Welkin)

From 33 starts, he had 14 wins and won about $39000 in prize money. His main wins included the
All-Aged Plate, Caulfield Futurity Stakes, and 1933 Doncaster Handicap and raced in the USA to win the Baltimore Handicap and Special Invitation Purse.

In his 1933 Doncaster Handicap win, carrying the equivalent of 63 kilograms, he ran 1.35.75 for the mile which broke Phar Lap's record.

He had been backed in to favouritism for the event despite the huge weight. The Burnie Advocate reported the plunge on April 4, 1933 as follows:

Twelve-thirty was the zero hour for placing a huge commission throughout Australia this afternoon which carried Winooka to outright favorite for the Doncaster Handicap.

In doubles with the Sydney Cup favourite Lough Neagh, Braeburn and Eastern Chief, Winooka was backed for £1000 in each case in Sydney alone, anti big wagers were reported to have been laid in Melbourne and Brisbane.

During the past few weeks Winooka has been reported as a possible non-starter in the Doncaster, and his connections announced on Saturday that they had not reached a decision. Apparently the failure of leading Doncaster horses at Rosehill on Saturday influenced them into the belief that Winooka could carry his 9.13 to victory at Randwick - a belief that does not meet with general support. Winooka will not race again before the Doncaster Handicap.
